What Is an EV Energy Manage System (EVESM)

An EV Energy Management System monitors the electrical demand on a property and manages the power available to an EV charger.

This can allow a Level 2 EV charger to be installed when the existing electrical service may not otherwise have enough available capacity for the additional load.

One commonly used residential EVEMS is the DCC-12, which automatically disconnects and reconnects EV charging based on the home's electrical demand.

The DCC-12 continuously monitors the electrical service. When demand exceeds 80% of the main breaker rating, it automatically disconnects the EV charger after a short trip delay.

Once electrical demand remains below the threshold for 15 minutes, power is automatically restored and EV charging resumes.

Most EV charging takes place in the evening or overnight, when household electrical demand is typically lower and electricity rates can also be lower. This means the EV charger can often operate for long periods without interruption.

An EVEMS can often allow a Level 2 EV charger to be installed on an existing 100-amp electrical service without upgrading to 200 amps, potentially saving thousands of dollars.

Customer-Supplied Level 2 EV Charger Installation

Typical installation: $1,000–$1,500 + GST

Professional installation of your own hardwired Level 2 EV charger, including standard wiring, breaker, connections, electrical testing & Electrical permit. Additional cable and labour priced accordingly to the installation requirements.

Level 2 EV Charger Supplied and Installed

Starting at $1,750 + GST

Includes a Level 2 EV charger, standard installation materials, labour and testing. Final pricing depends on the charger selected, distance from electrical panel, and installation requirements. Electrical permit additional.

DCC-12 EV Energy Management System (EVEMS)

Typical installation: $2,500 + GST

DCC-12 supplied and installed, including standard installation labour, wiring, breaker, connections and electrical permit.

An EVEMS monitors electrical demand and manages EV charging to help prevent overloading the home's electrical service. It may allow a Level 2 charger to be installed without upgrading the electrical service.
